Electricity Meters to Be Read from Space

Adm Elektrik, which provides electricity distribution services in the provinces of Aydın, Denizli, and Muğla, is pioneering another industry first by launching a new project to read electricity meters via satellite using Plan-S’s Connecta IoT Network technology. This innovative system will transform the sector by enabling meter data reading and energy loss detection, particularly in rural areas with limited GSM access.

Committed to providing sustainable and quality energy through continued technological investment, Adm Elektrik is achieving a national first through its cooperation with Plan-S Satellite and Space Technologies. The innovative system, which supports real-time data acquisition from electricity meters and analysis processes with modern infrastructure, will drive a significant transformation in the industry.

Revolutionizing Energy Management with IoT and Satellite Technology

Under the project, data from electricity meters, using an Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure, will be transmitted to Adm Elektrik’s data centers via satellites using Plan-S’s Connecta IoT Network technology. This modern technology will make the reading and analysis of meter data more efficient, even in rural areas with limited or insufficient GSM coverage. With this innovative system, Adm Elektrik aims to make its energy distribution processes more reliable, faster, and efficient, while also reducing its carbon footprint.

To Play a Key Role in Preventing Loss and Theft

The data transmitted via satellite will play a crucial role in enhancing energy efficiency and preventing loss and theft in the served regions. The system will enable real-time analysis of data from electricity meters, improving the detection of illegal electricity usage and the effectiveness of field operations.

“A Pride to Be a Pioneer”

Adm Elektrik General Manager Ahmet Bayramoğlu stated that they aim to use technology in every field of the energy sector to provide more efficient, reliable, and sustainable solutions: “This project will be a significant step forward for energy management. Weak GSM signal quality in rural areas was a major problem for existing remote reading systems. This solution will provide efficiency in field operations while also reducing the associated health and safety risks for our workforce. It is a pride to be a pioneer in technology.”

Plan-S CEO Tugay Güzel used the following statements regarding the cooperation with Adm:
“Digitizing energy management in many areas with the Connecta IoT Network is not only a technological leap but also a major step for environmental sustainability. This collaboration with Adm Elektrik will create a success story that will set an example for the sector.”

Pilot Studies Successfully Completed

During the project’s pilot phase, successful data flow was achieved from areas where data could not previously be collected, leading to significant advancements in meter reading processes. The full-scale implementation is planned to go live within 2025. The global coverage will be expanded with Plan-S’s four existing Connecta IoT Network satellites in orbit and four new satellites to be launched via the SpaceX Falcon 9 Transporter 12 mission. This will make meter reading operations more widespread, faster, and more effective.

About Adm Elektrik:

As the first private company to hold an electricity distribution license in Türkiye, Adm Elektrik delivers electricity—an indispensable part of daily life, as well as for agriculture, commerce, and industry—to consumers safely, efficiently, with an environment and human-focused service approach, and with technological systems suited to the requirements of the era.

Beginning its journey with the courageous step of being Türkiye’s pioneering private electricity distribution company, Adm Elektrik today provides uninterrupted 24/7 electricity distribution services across a total area of 33,000 square kilometers, comprising 49 districts and 1,856 neighborhoods in the provinces of Aydın, Denizli, and Muğla, serving 2.2 million customers and a population of 3.2 million.

About Plan-S:

Founded in Türkiye in 2021, Plan-S is a private venture reflecting the entrepreneurial spirit of the “New Space” movement. Aiming to be a pioneer in satellite-based communication systems, particularly in the Internet of Things (IoT) and Earth observation technologies, Plan-S demonstrates its expertise in satellite technologies through its “Space as a Solution” service.

The design, testing, and integration processes of its five satellites currently in orbit—Connecta T1.1, Connecta T1.2, Connecta T2.1, and Connecta T3.1 & T3.2—were entirely carried out by the Plan-S team and they were successfully launched via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Plan-S communicates with these satellites through three ground stations in Ankara and Erzurum.

With the Connecta IoT Network system, whose first four satellites were launched in August 2024 and which aims to increase its constellation to over 200 satellites in the near future, Plan-S will serve a wide range of sectors from energy to agriculture, and transportation to finance and insurance.
