Ankara, Türkiye – Plan-S, the space technology company behind Türkiye’s first commercial satellite constellation, has launched the country’s first space-based electricity meter reading system. Through its Connecta IoT Network, Plan-S is expanding beyond satellite manufacturing to deliver integrated IoT connectivity— bridging space and Earth with a vertically integrated solution for smart cities, agriculture, and the energy sector.

As part of a new agreement with a national electricity distribution company, 2,000 Smart Meter Modem Pro devices will be deployed to remotely read electricity meters via satellite. This milestone marks a major step in the digital transformation of Türkiye’s utility infrastructure.

Pioneering Space-Based Utility Monitoring

Founded in July 2021, Plan-S is reshaping how connectivity challenges are addressed, particularly in hard-to-reach regions. The Smart Meter Modem Pro— developed in-house—features low power consumption, extended battery life, and long-range communication via the LoRaWAN protocol. With dual-mode functionality, the devices operate seamlessly across both satellite and terrestrial networks and are built to perform under extreme environmental conditions. Data is transmitted once per day, with adjustable frequency as needed.

“This is more than a milestone—it’s a first for Türkiye and a breakthrough for our engineering team,” said Plan-S CEO Özdemir Gümüşay. “From building our own satellites to developing our IoT device systems, we’ve created a fully integrated ecosystem capable of solving real-world connectivity challenges—even in the most remote terrains. We’re proud to have launched this service in Türkiye, and we’re ready to take it to the global stage.”

Expanding Applications Across Utility Sectors

While the current implementation targets electricity meters, Plan-S has already initiated integration efforts for water and natural gas meters. The project reflects the company’s broader mission: to enable resilient, scalable IoT connectivity for critical infrastructure—especially in underserved or remote areas where traditional networks fall short.

Scaling IoT Device Production

Plan-S is now advancing to the mass production phase of its IoT device ecosystem, including smart modems, gateways, and satellite access terminals. This rollout is supported by a growing number of agreements in both domestic and international markets.

A Global Vision Rooted in Innovation

With a long-term goal of deploying more than 200 satellites in its Connecta IoT Network, Plan-S continues to lead the charge in next-generation satellite-powered IoT communication. This latest development underscores the company’s commitment to bridging digital divides and delivering seamless connectivity solutions worldwide.
